چکیده

The deformation behavior of bulk ZnO single crystals is studied by a combination of spherical nanoindentation and atomic force microscopy. Results show that ZnO exhibits plastic deformation for relatively low loads ~*4–13 mN with an ;4.2 mm radius spherical indenter!. Interestingly, the elastic–plastic deformation transition threshold depends on the loading rate, with faster loading resulting, on average, in larger threshold values. Multiple discontinuities ~so called ‘‘pop-in’’ events! in force–displacement curves are observed during indentation loading. No discontinuities are observed on unloading. Slip is identified as the major mode of plastic deformation in ZnO, and pop-in events are attributed to the initiation of slip. An analysis of partial load–unload data reveals values of the hardness and Young’s modulus of 5.060.1 and 111.264.7 GPa, respectively, for a plastic penetration depth of 300 nm. Physical processes determining deformation behavior of ZnO are discussed. © 2002 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1448175#

Time-dependent mechanical-electrical coupled behavior in single crystal ZnO nanorods

Nanoscale time-dependent mechanical-electrical coupled behavior of single crystal ZnO nanorods was systematically explored, which is essential for accessing the long-term reliability of the ZnO nanorod-based flexible devices. A series of compression creep tests combined with in-situ electrical measurement was performed on vertically-grown single crystal ZnO nanorods. Continuous measurement of t...

Mechanical Characteristics and Failure Mechanism of Nano-Single Crystal Aluminum Based on Molecular Dynamics Simulations: Strain Rate and Temperature Effects

Besides experimental methods, numerical simulations bring benefits and great opportunities to characterize and predict mechanical behaviors of materials especially at nanoscale. In this study, a nano-single crystal aluminum (Al) as a typical face centered cubic (FCC) metal was modeled based on molecular dynamics (MD) method and by applying tensile and compressive strain loadings its mechanical ...

Formation of piezoelectric single-crystal nanorings and nanobows.

Bending of polar-surface-dominated (PSD) nanobelts of ZnO can be explained by one of two processes: electrostatic neutralization of the dipole moment via deformation (called an electrostatic polar charge model) or imbalances between surface tensions via surface-termination induced stresses. This article presents experimental data on the structural features of nanorings and nanobows formed by be...

X-ray analysis of ZnO nanoparticles by Williamson-Hall and size-strain plot methods

ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) were prepared by a solegel combustion method from a zinc acetate precursor and acetic acid. The ZnO-NPs were synthesized at calcination temperatures of 650 C and 750 C for 1 h. The synthesized ZnO-NPs were characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) and TEM. The XRD results revealed that the sample product was crystalline with a hexagonal wurtzite phase. Highma...

Studies on the Optical, Mechanical and Dielectric Properties of Nonlinear Optical Single Crystal Bis (Guanidinium) Hydrogen Phosphate Monohydrate (G2HP)

Single crystals of nonlinear optical material bis (guanidinium) hydrogen phosphate monohydrate (G2HP) belonging to non centrosymmetric space group P 21c were successfully grown by the slow evaporation method. Optical transmittance and second harmonic generation of the grown crystals have been studied by UV-vis-NIR spectrum and Kurtz powder technique respectively. The transmittance of G2HP cryst...
